Changing the Scene- Bill Kaulitz

From the time he hit the scene with his breakout band Devilish in 2000, Bill Kaulitz has had a uniquely androgynous style that is permeating the fashion world. In 2001, with the debut of Devilish as Tokio Hotel, Kaulitz hit national fame in Germany. At age ten Kaulitz earned an international name when the band released “Scream,” an English version of the German album “Schrei.” By the time he hit 11, various piercings and tattoos accompanied Bill’s trademark rock style of long hair, fitted t-shirts, and distressed jeans. Within a few years, his style became increasingly unique and reached shocking levels with his adaption of the “lion’s mane” hair and dark makeup.

With the release of Tokio Hotel’s 2009 album Humaniod (German and English versions), Kaulitz updated his style. As a prominent figure in European pop-culture he evolved into a chic, high fashion, glam rocker that has influenced designers and inspired other singers, such as Adam Lambert. His twin brother Tom, the guitarist for Tokio Hotel, has a hip-hop and rap inspired street style that has also received attention. The twins enjoy trying to influence the other’s style, which showed around two years ago when Bill put some of his hair into dreadlocks, doing away with his famous lion’s mane, and fusing the rock and hip-hop styles.

With his now signature mohawk, Bill calls back to the punk-rock scene of the 80’s, bringing it to a modern, chic state when combined with his glam-rock clothing. Bill often wears structured jackets, emphasizing his shoulders and waist, with skinny jeans or pants, and either boots or heels. He’s not beyond altering women’s clothing to get the look he wants. To accessorize Bill layers necklaces, bracelets, or gloves and has never gotten rid of his love for makeup or nail polish.

Along with singing, Bill has modeled for DSquared2, has been featured with his brother Tom in Italian Vogue, and done German voice-overs for movies. He has said that as a child he was inspired by people like David Bowie, especially in his role as Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth, and if he were to ever give up singing he would go into fashion design. The style that Bill has been developing since he was a child is now appearing on the streets and on the runways with the growing trend of androgynous styles. While this trend has been more popular in Europe, it is beginning to show up in America more, especially in cities such as New York. Bill and Tom recently moved the band’s headquarters to LA, so we may begin to see Bill’s glam-rocker style emerge closer to home. From the stage, to the runway, to the streets, Bill’s style is undeniably recognizable, and pervading the scene of men’s fashion.
